Intern - China - Study

In 2015, we expanded the Intern Study to China, beginning to recruit interns at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). 83 PUMCH interns, making up 74% of eligible participants, completed an initial survey prior to beginning their training in September 2015. Four follow-up surveys were subsequently conducted within the intern year. Preliminary findings suggest that many of the stress-related challenges prevalent in the U.S. may also be arising within the Chinese system.

In 2016, thanks to a grant from the U-M/SJTU Joint Institute, we enrolled an additional 400 interns from 14 hospitals affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in the study. Our ongoing recruitment efforts have successfully garnered 500-600 new SJTU residents each year.

In July 2021, we were the recipients of a Michigan Medicine-PKUHSC Joint Institute award in conjunction with Peking University Sixth Hospital (Institute of Mental Health). Having completed the collection of first-year data and samples, we are now conducting the study's second year. Two additional institutions have joined the recruitment pool.

We firmly believe in the potential benefits of U.S.-China collaboration. Through the amalgamation and analysis of additional data, we hope to gain valuable insights into the internship programs at both locations.
